Looking for More Teaching Resources?
By Barbara Rhodes, Media Consultant, Northeast Texas Library System

The Northeast Texas Library System (NETLS) Media Collection has hundreds of educational videos and DVDs for preschool and school age children. Your public library can serve as a gateway to them. All you need is a library card!

“One homeschooling mom found some videos on Ancient Egypt. Her 7-year-old had become fascinated by the topic and had exhausted everything we owned. She was pleased to see some “new” titles. Another group found some videos on good manners that they found helpful.”
Margie Sanchez, Abilene Public Library

The NETLS Media Collection consists of approximately 4200 educational VHS videos and DVDs, and over 600 die blocks. The collection, which has served public libraries and their patrons for over 20 years, was developed to provide a source of educational media which might otherwise be too expensive or specialized for a single library to purchase.

“The NETLS Media Collection has been extremely useful for the homeschoolers of our community. One family uses the collection to supplement Science lessons while another supplemented their son's English curriculum.”
Barbara Moore, Driscoll Public Library

The NETLS Media Collection can provide a wide range of educational DVDs and videos to complement and expand home school curriculums. Parents with visual learners in the family will find media especially useful. Materials cover age ranges from pre-kindergarten through adult. The collection’s online catalog, WebBOOK©, located at http://www.av.netls.org is available for anyone to visit and search, 7 days a week, 23 hours a day. The catalog can be searched by title, subject or keyword. Some of the subjects you will find are:

· Geography
· Science
· Math
· History
· Ethics/Personal Values
· Holidays
· Multicultural Information
· Programs based on the best in children’s literature
· Health/Safety/Citizenship
· Driver’s Education

After you have searched the catalog and chosen some likely titles, take a list of your selections to your public library where a member of the library staff can go online and book the materials for you. The items will be sent to the library where they can be picked up. The general booking and delivery period is two weeks and the amount of time you may keep the items at home will depend on the loaning procedures at your local library.

Go online to http://www.av.netls.org and visit the NETLS Media Collection catalog today. Our materials can enhance the home school experience for students and teachers alike.

Free College Can Happen to YOU!
By Jean Burk

Full Scholarship -two words that could change your life. Getting free college can be like winning the lottery. Imagine throwing away several trash bags full of college scholarships that come in the mail. This is what happened to us. But for some families, getting just one scholarship offer could be the difference in junior college or the university of their choice.

As a homeshooling family, you’ve already dedicated your time, money and energy for your family, so don’t stop there! Even if you haven’t had a lot of extra money to save for college, scholarships can still come your way. Just because you’ve homeschooled, doesn’t mean that you have to be out of the loop when it comes to finding the scholarship
opportunities.

Here are five successful secrets to scholarships and free college that even many public and private schools students are not aware of:

  1. Realize that full scholarships can be obtained by students who receive certain scores on their PSAT/NMSQT or SAT tests. You can have colleges begging you to enroll and who will gladly pay your way. There are usually several full-rides available in each department of most colleges and they love to give them to kids with good test scores.

  1. Understand that the PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT tests are tests of logic. They are not about exclusive knowledge or curriculum only learned at public or private schools. Many smart kids (from all academic backgrounds) do poorly on these tests because they don’t understand the test or how to look at the questions logically.

  1. Discover that succeeding on these tests can be just a matter of learning the test-taking techniques and recurring patterns found on these standardized tests. The questions very often point you to the answers and students can learn to answer them quickly once they discover the secret methods that many others successful test-takers have.

  1. Create a successful game plan. After learning the secret strategies of decoding these tests, incorporate this information into your homeschooling. Spend twenty minutes a day or an hour or two a week practicing these techniques on actual tests from the College Board. This will also keep students from cramming at test time.

  1. Prepare your freshman and sophomores to take the PSAT/NMSQT for practice in October and definitely take it in their junior year. This is when it counts for all the big scholarship money. Students should take the real SAT test when their practice scores are above 1500 (the national average) or if they are a senior. The SAT is offered seven times a year and there is no penalty for taking it many times. Colleges usually drop the lowest scores (they don’t average them) and some schools will even take the highest score from each section from different tests.

The home education decision is a life-changing experience and when homeschoolers get the high scores and the incredible scholarships, it speaks for itself. For us, the sacrifice was more than worth it. Besides, we got free college and so can you.

3. THEO IN PLANO OFFERING CLASSES FOR 2007-2008

From their NEW SPACE at 15th and Custer!!

Plano’s THEO—The Outsourcing Solution for Home Schoolers---was born to fill in the gaps of what is available to North Texas home educated students. We strive to offer classes which require a large pool of students to “make.”

We chose a centrally placed location, one mile north of George Bush Tollway and two miles west of 75, to provide classes for the home educated junior high and high school student who wants something different.

Bursting at the seams with newly added shop and drafting, sign language, chorus, theater and speech and even a writing club for those students (or adults) who love to write and long to be published, THEO has a heart to help families homeschool through high school, without missing out on the highly academic classes or extracurricular classes offered by public and private schools.

After all, you can hardly have a writing club for excellent writers if you are pulling only from a few hundred families….but you can if you are pulling the best writers from all over the metroplex….same goes for chorus and band a/k/a Instrumental Ensemble….

Academic Tutoring Available:
THEO also offers academic tutoring in a classroom setting for math, science, Spanish, writing, Worldview and more. THEO caters to 6-12th grade, but Paula Smith offers science for all grades from our same great location through The Science Resource. www.thescienceresource.com
