FOR MORE INFORMATION
The PSAT/NMSQT, also known as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, is a standardized test that provides practice for the SAT. Additionally, the PSAT/NMSQT gives 11th graders a chance to enter the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) scholarship programs. A student may take the test for practice in the years preceding his 11th grade year, but the student's test score will count toward the National Merit Scholarship program only in his 11th grade year.

13 Myths About the SAT (part 1 of 2)
By Jean Burk
Are you or your child looking forward to the college adventure? Are you moments away from being out on your own, living the dorm fiesta? You are ready to go, yet you haven't started preparing. The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is a hurdle that every college-bound student must face. Nearly every university in the United States requires this test for admission, and it can be a determining factor when it comes to college admission and scholarships.
Admittedly, taking this test is daunting. The idea that the results could affect your college career and possibly the rest of your life can cause anxiety and even panic. Even smart kids can do poorly on this test. What is the average student to do? The answer lies in gaining knowledge of the test structure.
There are a lot of misconceptions about the SAT, and these misconceptions can hurt one's score. Hopefully, by clearing up some of these misunderstandings, students will be better able to conquer these tests. Here is a list of thirteen common myths about the SAT and the PSAT/NMSQT tests.
Myth #1 - The SAT assesses a student's knowledge.

3. THEO IN PLANO OFFERING CLASSES FOR 2007-2008
From their NEW SPACE at 15th and Custer!!
Plano's THEO - The Outsourcing Solution for Home Schoolers---was born to fill in the gaps of what is available to North Texas home educated students. We strive to offer classes which require a large pool of students to "make."
We chose a centrally placed location, one mile north of George Bush Tollway and two miles west of 75, to provide classes for the home educated junior high and high school student who wants something different.
Bursting at the seams with newly added shop and drafting, sign language, chorus, theater and speech and even a writing club for those students (or adults) who love to write and long to be published, THEO has a heart to help families homeschool through high school, without missing out on the highly academic classes or extracurricular classes offered by public and private schools.
After all, you can hardly have a writing club for excellent writers if you are pulling only from a few hundred families....but you can if you are pulling the best writers from all over the metroplex....same goes for chorus and band a/k/a Instrumental Ensemble....
Academic Tutoring Available:
THEO also offers academic tutoring in a classroom setting for math, science, Spanish, writing, Worldview and more. THEO caters to 6-12th grade, but Paula Smith offers science for all grades from our same great location through The Science Resource. www.thescienceresource.com

This makes the Herdmans infiltrate the only safe haven in all of town. The next Sunday during Sunday school, Imogene Herdman heard about a pageant, and became interested in this "Christmas Pageant" and decided to sign all the Herdmans up for all the main, important parts. This could only mean one thing; TROUBLE! In the end, the Herdmans find out the true meaning of love.

Soon after Ugly is born, he is wisked away by a wily Cat who wants to eat Ugly for dinner. Eventually, Ugly manages to escape but has no idea how to return home. Along his way, he encounters a beautiful swan, Penny, tangled in a fishing line. After saving her, the two birds fall in love. However, she must return to her flock and fly south for the winter. Eventually, Ugly's mother finds him frozen in snow. Luckily, her warm tears manage to thaw him out and he comes back to life - as a handsome swan! Soon, Ugly is reunited with Penny and two swans decide to live the rest of their days in the same pond as Ugly's loyal mother.
NOVEMBER 2-11 --- Charlotte's Web (Auditions Oct 1-3)
An affectionate, sometimes bashful pig named Wilbur befriends a spider named Charlotte, who lives in the rafters above his pen. A prancing, playful bloke, Wilbur is devastated when he learns of the destiny that befalls all those of piggy persuasion. Determined to save her friend, Charlotte spins a web that reads "Some Pig," convincing the farmer and surrounding community that Wilbur is no ordinary animal and should be saved. In this story of friendship, hardship, and the passing on into time, E.B. White reminds us to open our eyes to the wonder and miracle often found in the simplest of things.
DECEMBER 7-16 --- Frontier Santa (Auditions October 22-24)
Frontier Santa is the story of a group of orphans living in an alley in the rough and tumble town of Fort Worth in 1879. Christmas - and a Blue Norther - is approaching and things look bleak. But rather than fuss and moan, the kids decide to do their best to make their own holiday celebration a success. They scatter throughout the town to gather decorations, food and presents for their own party in the alley - but tell Johnny that he's too little to help. Too little?! Johnny sets his sights on finding Santa Claus to be their guest of honor, recruiting some of Fort Worth's most colorful characters to help him. What they find is sure to fire up the spirit of the season. Book by Frances Seidensticker, music and lyrics by Fort Worth's Linda M. Lee.
JANUARY 25 - FEBRUARY 3 --- Holes (Auditions November 26-28)
Stanley is just a regular kid until he is found responsible for a crime he didn't commit. We learn about a curse that has been in his family for several generations. His bad luck lands Stanley in a very strange correctional camp in the Texas desert. The warden has all the inmates digging holes in a dry lake bed. The story weaves fascinating tall tales from local history and Stanley's family. The relationships among the juveniles in the camp develop self worth in this moving story of teen self discovery. Stanley finds a good friend, treasure, and a story worth telling.
FEBRUARY 22 - MARCH 2 --- Follow That Rabbit (Auditions January 14-16)
From the moment Alice falls down a rabbit hole into the zany world of Wonderland, the fun never stops. You'll meet talking birds and animals, singing flowers, hilariously comic kings and queens . . . and find yourself attending a race where the contestants run in circles getting nowhere and everybody wins! There's a frantic tea party ruled over by the Mad Hatter; and a funny scene where Alice must deal with a pepper-sneezing Duchess and a baby that turns into a pig! The finale has Alice at the trial of the Knave of Hearts for stealing tarts; and she is suddenly the accused. Here's a modern view of a classic where nonsense makes good sense. And Alice even finds a new friend: the watch-carrying White Rabbit.
MARCH 28 - APRIL 6 --- Pied Piper of Hamlin (Auditions February 11-12)
The singing, rhyming citizens of Hamelin hope to win a competition with rival towns for royal recognition. To this end, the mayor outlaws play (which is a bit hard on the children) and refuses to help a rival town when it's flooded. But rats (seen only as shadows), fleeing the flood, invade Hamelin in droves; a magical piper, whose music only children (and rats) can hear, strikes a bargain...which, once the rats are gone, the Mayor and council renege on, to their subsequent regret.
MAY 2 - 11 --- Disney's Beauty and the Beast (Open Auditions March 10-12)
2008 Fundraiser Show
Step into the enchanted world of Broadway's modern classic, Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. You will be transported to a lovely French provincial town where the beautiful Belle lives with her father - a silly inventor. When her father doesn't return from a trip to the local fair, Belle rushes off to find him. To her dismay, she discovers he is being held captive in an old castle by a horrible beast. BE THRILLED by a doll who comes to life - or does she? Enter the fanciful world of Coppélia, ballet's timeless tale of obsession and true love tested by an eccentric toymaker.
Ben Stevenson's celebrated choreography and Desmond Heeley's sumptuous sets provide a festive welcome to a sunny storybook village, where high-spirited dancing paints a scene that says "Join in!" But things may not be what they seem when quarreling lovers encounter the clever creations - and devious intentions - of the mysterious Dr. Coppelius.
Our eyes and his are easily fooled when suddenly, in the gloomy corners of the Doctor's workshop, Coppélia comes alive! It's all about the ballet when the townspeople toast love and laughter with a feast of traditional czardas and mazurkas.
Texas Ballet Theater presents Ben Stevenson's Coppélia, set to the original score by Léo Delibes performed by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Jack Buckhannan. Bring friends and family to this magical performance of drama, dance and delight at the ballet.

20. FORT WORTH MUSEUM OF SCIENCE & HISTORY ---- CLOSED UNTIL SPRING 2008
Important Message from the Museum:
In September, the Museum of Science and History will move forward with plans to construct a new, world-class Museum campus to replace our aging Museum building. On September 4, we'll move out of our existing facility as we start our two-year construction phase. In October, the building - with the exception of the Omni Theater - will be removed to make space for the new facility, to be built on the same location.
Over the next two years, you can still experience our exhibits in our temporary home right next door at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. Our ExploraZone exhibit "Seeing" is already there, the first of a series of exhibits that uphold our long-standing focus on hands-on interactivity.
In November you'll find exhibits both new and familiar, including our immensely popular KIDSPACE® and a new Design Lab - part laboratory, part art studio and part classroom - where students of all ages will be able to learn by questioning and exploring.
Our temporary home in the National Cowgirl Museum also means that for one ticket price, you'll experience "two museums under one roof" with free access to National Cowgirl Museum exhibits and collections that celebrate the lives of legendary women who exemplified the pioneer spirit of the American West.
Later this fall, you can visit a Preview Center offering updates on construction of our new campus, and shop in a new Museum Store that will offer items such as fossils, science toys and books.
We're IMAX-imizing your Theater Experience.
Omni Theater IMAX® film presentations will be suspended starting September 4 for construction that will replace the theater's sound system with a new state-of-the-art digital sound system and make upgrades to our guest amenities, including new restrooms and concession areas. The upgraded theater is slated to open in late spring 2008 with great, new films like Mummies, Deep Sea and more.
Noble Planetarium Plans
While we're constructing a new Noble Planetarium, astronomy enthusiasts will continue to have access to a full schedule of astronomy programs. The Museum will continue to host Monthly Star Parties, occasional telescope workshops, and regular meetings of the Fort Worth Astronomical Society at nearby locations, including the National Cowgirl Museum.
Educational Programs
We're passionate about our commitment to Texas students, who will experience "two museums under one roof" through joint field trips to the National Cowgirl Museum and the Museum of Science and History. We're also taking our learning initiatives "on the road" directly to the classroom. DesignIT workshops, Discovery Labs on Wheels, Distance Learning teleconferences and Family Science Festivals will take engaging hands-on activities to schools across the region. Our Loan Kit program and Saturday Educator Workshops will also continue. Educators can find our 2007-08 School Field Trip Planner online in late September.
Museum School®
Museum School won't miss a beat! Year-round preschool programs continue to be offered in the new transitional village west of the National Cowgirl Museum. Weekend classes for school-aged children will resume in late fall.
Membership Benefits
We're still here - and so are your membership benefits. During construction, you'll receive extended member benefits, special offers and discounts to area attractions and partners, and other valuable bonuses. Your membership will continue to provide free exhibit admission to the National Cowgirl Museum and, when the Omni Theater reopens next spring, you'll be first in line to experience the renovated theater during special member events. And don't forget: your membership is still valid for free admission to more than 250 science centers across the country.
The coming months will bring dramatic change for the Fort Worth Museum and Science and History. We're committed to keeping you posted about activities and programs throughout the building period. We hope that you share our excitement as we look forward to the new Museum facility and the many rich learning opportunities it will provide our community for decades to come. Stay tuned!

38. TJEd MEETING IN COLLEYVILLE: A THOMAS JEFFERSON EDUCATION
SEPTEMBER 22
Time: 7:00-9:00pm
Location: 3302 Queensbury Way
To RSVP or For More Information: 817-571-7766
Details: Have you ever heard of TJEd? If you are a native Texas homeschooler, chances are that you have not. Come meet with our fabulous parent's group. Review with us some of the principles that will revolutionize the way you think about homeschooling. Fifteen years ago, Oliver DeMille and a small group of powerful mentors founded the first fledgling college that would promote TJEd. George Wythe College began as a small branch of Coral Ridge Baptist University. Modelled after the religious schools that embodied the best education from colonial times up through the Civil War, TJEd seeks to enthrone once again the mentor education model espoused by our Founding Fathers. Don't miss this chance to look closely at the way our Founders were educated. Their model exists today, in TJEd. If we are to meet the challenges of millennial America, we need to raise up a whole generation of statesmen who are prepared to preserve freedom!
Graciously Hosted by Ed and Allison Koester
Suggested (not required) reading for this meeting:
"The First Fifteen Years: the History of
the Founding of George Wythe College"

(excerpt found at: www.gwc.edu)
Come enjoy an evening of TJEd principles. Share your struggles and triumphs in homeschooling, and let us mentor each other.
Light refreshments will be served.

41. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR LITTLE HANDS ON THE FARM --- STATE FAIR OF TEXAS
SEPTEMBER 28 - OCTOBER 21
What is Little Hands on the Farm: Little Hands on the Farm is the Number 1, most talked about attraction at the fair. It is located prominently in the agricultural area within feet of the petting zoo, coliseum and the Cotton Bowl. We are expecting nearly 1,000 family members per hour to move through this featured attraction.
Volunteers Needed: We need 50 volunteers each day, 25 "farmer assistants" in two 5 hour shifts to be an integral part of the educational process. We can combine several small groups if you find it difficult to locate a full 50 within your group. Volunteers must be at least 12 years of age (younger ones can come but cannot be counted as a volunteer) and we need 1 "adult" volunteer for every 3 "children" volunteers.
Many of those who volunteered last year signed up their family members. This allowed the entire family to come to the fair (a $100 value for a family of five), provide community service, spend five hours interacting with thousands of people, introduce children to where their food comes from and spend the remainder of the day visiting the rest of the fair.
Shift Hours: The Little Hands program opens at 10:00am and closes at 7:00pm. The first shift would arrive on the grounds at 8:45am and start at 9:00am with orientation. The morning group of volunteers would finish at 2:15pm, the second group arrives at 1:45pm, starts at 2:00pm and finishes at 7:15pm.
Benefits: State Fair of Texas provides each volunteer a Little Hands t-shirt, an admission ticket to the fair and parking passes for each family. We ask everyone to car pool as much as possible as parking in the Blue lot is always crowded.
If your family or group would like to participate: Contact Sondra or Candyce at 817-279-8223 or sondra@owranchtx.com.

44. LONE STAR HISTORY DAY: A SPECIAL DAY FOR HOME SCHOOL STUDENTS
OCTOBER 5

In a day just for home schooled students and their families, explore art throughout our historic buildings. How do people make art a part of their life? What kinds of art were admired in the 19th century? How did ordinary people become artists?
We'll be exploring 5 key areas of art: Portraits; Ordinary Objects Made Beautiful; Fine Art; Advertising Art ; and Hobbies
Some questions that we will be asking and answering during this event are:
How do history and art intersect?
How and why have once common artistic skills become specialized skills?
How did people from the past make their homes beautiful?

False: This test is
all about reasoning and logic. It contains
universal questions that anyone can answer
regardless of their academic background
(public, private, or home-school). So all
that stuff about Abraham Lincoln and
microeconomics: throw it out the window.
There are three sections: math, verbal, and
writing, and these test your critical
thinking and basic skill level, not your
knowledge.
Myth #2 - Take the
SAT in your senior year.
False: Don't wait
until the senior year! I repeat: this is
not a knowledge-based test. You
should be able to answer most of the
questions by ninth grade. Universities
generally take applications in the fall
before you graduate, and most of these
applications require SAT scores, so if you
waited to take it, you may not be able to
apply to the college of your choice. Also,
you can take the SAT multiple times, so if
you take it early, you can take it again if
you're not satisfied with your score. Give
yourself some leeway room, and don't add
pressure to your final year of high school
by waiting to take the SAT.
Myth #3 - The
PSAT/NMSQT is a practice SAT and is not
important.
False: The letter "P"
actually stands for Preliminary, not
Practice. The NMSQT stands for National
Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. This
means that this test can actually earn you
scholarships! If you do well, this one test
can give you a free-ride to just about any
college. Take this test seriously. It only
counts in your junior year for scholarships,
but take it for practice in ninth and tenth
grades.
Myth #4 - You only
have one chance at the PSAT/NMSQT
test.
False: Although the
PSAT/NSQT is only offered once every fall.
If the need arises, you can take the
alternative testing method. You will need to
contact The National Merit Corporation
before March. Students would then take the
regular SAT 1 and their score would be
converted. Students will still be eligible
for scholarships. The test can be taken
several times since the will take the
highest score.
Myth #5 - Students
should guess on SAT answers if you don't know
them.
False: There is a
penalty for guessing on a question and being
wrong. One-fourth of a point will be
subtracted from your raw score. This may not
seem like a lot, but over the ten sections
of the SAT, it could really add up. By
understanding that the questions can point
you to the answer, it's a matter of
eliminating all the wrong answers first and
then being left with the correct one. If you
aren't able to confidently eliminate a few
answers, you should probably skip the
question.

To make matters worse, Charlie Bradley told Leroy Herdman, one of six horrible Herdman kids who curse, smoke, swear, and steal that people who go to Sunday School get free refreshments.

Replete with native flora and fauna, the area beckons to those searching for a piece of nature to refresh their spirits and reintroduce a measure of tranquility to their increasingly urban lifestyles.
Over 3600 acres, the FWNC&R is the largest city-owned nature center in the United States and offers residents and visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in the natural history of north central Texas . Over 20 miles of hiking trails provide easy access to a myriad of natural wonders to be found on the Refuge. Staff naturalists at the Hardwicke Interpretive Center are available to facilitate your exploration.
The FWNC&R is located on the northwest side of Fort Worth, four miles west of I-820 on Jacksboro Hwy. (TX Hwy 199).

16. PERFORMANCES AT CATS THEATER IN ARLINGTON
SEPTEMBER 28 - OCTOBER 7 --- Honk, Jr.
Based on Hans Christian Andersen's "The Ugly Duckling", "Honk!" tells the story of an odd looking baby duck, Ugly, and his quest to find his mother.
She trades her freedom for his and the "tale as old as time" begins.

19. TEXAS BALLET THEATER PERFORMANCES --- SEPTEMBER
SEPTEMBER 21 at 8 p.m.
SEPTEMBER 22 at 2 p.m.
SEPTEMBER 22 at 8 p.m.
SEPTEMBER 23 at 2 p.m.
Location: Bass Performance Hall
Fort Worth, TX

Location: 3302 Queensbury Way
Colleyville, TX
Who: Homeschooling
Parents
"The First Fifteen Years: the History of
the Founding of George Wythe College"
http://www.gwc.edu/pdf/gwc_history.pdf
