FEATURED ARTICLE
Ten Terrific Tips for a High SAT Score (part 2 of 2)
By Jean Burk
This is the second part of a two-part series. You can find Part 1 of the article in the November 2007 issue of our newsletter, or by Clicking Here. If you would like to subscribe to our newsletter write us at info@heartoftex.org
6.) Read a lot of good classic books.
Reading a lot of classic books over the years will help in several ways. They are usually filled with great vocabulary words that may be found on the SAT tests. Also, storing up knowledge about these books can come in handy when writing the SAT essay; The College Board seems to like it when you recall famous works. And of course, having a storehouse of great literary works won’t hurt when you interview for college.
7.) Work some logic curriculum.
The SAT is not a test about knowledge; rather, it is a reasoning and logic test. This is why the same test can be administered all over the nation to students with different curriculum backgrounds. By being aware of this, students can prepare early by taking some logic classes that can help them with their critical thinking and reasoning skills.
8.) Practice at home as if you were taking the actual SAT test.
Creating a testing environment at home that mimics the real test environment can help with success on the SAT. Students should take practice tests around 9:00 in the morning with only a five minute break between sections. Pace yourself by keeping a watch or timer nearby and be sure to have several sharpened pencils ready. Use the same calculator you will use on the real test. Since the real test is over three hours long, practicing like this can help your endurance.
9.) Take the required math before your senior year.
Make sure you are up to date on the required math of the SAT. If at all possible, take Algebra 1 and Geometry before eleventh grade. This will cover the math on the PSAT/NMSQT which only counts in your junior year. The new SAT has some Algebra 2 which should be taken as soon as possible.
10.) On test day, be prepared, rested and confident. Remember, your SAT score is not the sole representation of your abilities.
If you have done your “homework,” taking the SAT should not feel like the end of the world. Make sure you rest the day before the test, go to be early, and have all your supplies ready before you wake. Arrive early, take some deep breaths and start in.
If you have prepared for the SAT before your senior year, taking the test should be old hat to you. Remember, everyone else there is taking the same test, so relax.. The main difference in scores between you and them can be determined by your preparedness beforehand.
Jean Burk is a published author, speaker and teacher. She has been featured on television as an expert on the SAT and PSAT tests, College Prep and How to Get Free College. Jean is also a “completed” home school mom. Both of her children received incredible scholarships because of their PSAT and SAT scores. She has been teaching her “Master the SAT” Prep Class in the D/FW area and many surrounding cities. She also travels and speaks about her book College Prep Genius. You may contact her at Jean@collegeprepgenius.com or visit her site at www.collegeprepgenius.com.

How to Start Up or Get Involved in a Cub Scout (or Boy Scout) Program
By Jason Buescher
While this article includes information related to the Cub Scout program, these same steps would be applicable if your child is interested in pursuing Boy Scouts.
Contact An Area Representative for a Program Near You.
There are several ways to get in touch with an area representative. Just use the way that is most convenient for you! Please have the name of your city and closest major intersection ready to give us. Let us know if you are interested in forming a group with other home school families or if you want to join an existing Cub Scout Program.
Why Join Cub Scouts?
But we know that boys do not join Cub Scouting for character building; boys join because it is fun!
Where Are the Cub Scouts?
Cub Scout Packs are everywhere! You just need to know how to find them. The Longhorn Council, Boys Scouts of America covers 23 counties in North Texas. Within this 23 county area are corporations, civic clubs, and churches that charter Cub Scout Packs. These charter partners are a part of a district area in the Longhorn Council. The council has service representatives for each district. That representative can help you find an existing pack near you or help you form your own Cub Scout Pack along with other interested home school parents.
Jason Buescher is the District Director of the Longhorn Council for the Boy Scouts of America. His district includes Grapevine, Southlake, Colleyville, Trophy Club, Roanoke, and the HEB area. You may contact him at bsalakeview@aol.com or by calling him at 817-231-8533.

- Call our office and speak to our representative: 817-231-8502
- Send an email: ksteffy@longhorn.org Subject Line: “I want to join Cub Scouts!”
- Visit our website to find local Cub Scout programs near you: www.longhorncouncil.com
Why Join Cub Scouts?
- Your time is valuable. Today’s families, more than ever, struggle to find time to spend together. Cub Scouting helps to support your family by providing ready-made opportunities for you and your son to do things together.
- Your son needs to belong to a group of boys his own age. Through this sense of belonging, he builds his self-esteem and learns to get along with others. As a parent, you want to be assured that the groups your boy joins will teach values consistent with good citizenship, character development, and physical fitness. Boy Scouts of America has been weaving these lifetime values into fun and educational activities since 1910.
- In a society where your son is taught that winning is everything, Cub Scouting teaches him to “do his best” and to be helpful to others.
- Scouting teaches family values and works to strengthen your relationship with your son.
- Scouting activities can bring added value to the time you already have with your son.
