4. THEO IN PLANO OFFERING SUMMER SAT PREP AND SUMMER ACTIVITIES

SAT Prep Clases: Tuesday mornings beginning June 19
For high school students will be offered weekly from 9-12 on Tuesday mornings beginning June 19 and continuing every Tuesday through August 14. The final details will be posted on the web shortly, so watch for updates. The kids will move through four stations which expand their knowledge incrementally without making them feel like they have labored and lost their summer. I am thrilled with the concept we have built into this affordable weekly SAT prep class; I believe you will also be pleased with the results if your students participate.

Summer Activities for ages 13-15: Weekly Throughout the Summer
We have decided that students 13 to 15 years old endure some of their hardest summers. They are too young to work and yet too old to enjoy the activities that once captivated their elementary aged summer vacations. Because of this dilemma, we will offer field trips and activities for students weekly during June, July and August. Some will be service projects, but not all. We want them to have a chance to fellowship—playing games, doing art projects, watching movies, going on field trips and more.

At the end of each semester the students will participate in a speech competition rated by judges. Students are greatly encouraged and confidence is strengthened. This is a fun class! Even reluctant first-timers will enjoy it.

1. Literary Interpretation (children's story)
2. Oratorical Interpretation (famous speech)

31. HOME SCHOOL SPEECH AND DEBATE CLUB FORMING IN PLANO/RICHARDSON --- INFORMATION MEETING

JUNE 20 --- Meeting to Introduce a Home School Speech and Debate Club in the Richardson/Plano Area

Time: 1-3 PM

Location: The Summit Church
4101 E Park Blvd, Plano, TX 75074
(NW corner of Los Rios and Park Blvd. in East Plano).
972-578-9999

For More Information or to RSVP: Email Sandra Carey at sandra_d_carey@yahoo.com

Presenters: We are very fortunate to have Suzanne Nasser, Administrator of Speak Out North Texas bringing Marshall Sherman who will do his Persuasive Speech on Parental Authority (the speech which won him 1st place in the Region in Persuasive) and his humorous interpretation entitled Lone Stranger. Also presenting is Alan Carrillo, a two-time IRON MAN at the National Tournament demonstrating his skill at Impromptu. Alan will have 30 seconds to prepare a speech on a topic we select. John Ehrett, Adam Nasser, Alan Carrillo and Samantha Nasser will be demonstrating their award-winning skills at Team Policy Debate on this year's topic "Resolved: That the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) should be significantly reformed or abolished."

Volunteers Needed: A successful club needs committed leadership. Experience in debate is not required. There are many opportunities to contribute, even if it is only a minor contribution. The club needs individuals for the following areas: Coaching, Program Planning, Facility, Tournaments, Communication/Web, Registration, Finance, Fund Raising and Social.

I am a former competitor, having competed in debate and Forensics with the National Forensics League. I also had the privilege of participating in the Model United Nations in The Hague, The Netherlands as a delegate. I hope my experience will be an asset to the students, but I will be reaching out to other area clubs for guidance. They have offered expertise and resources in the hope that our club will nurture strong participants for local tournaments.

Focus/Vision for the Club: The focus would be initially on bringing very basic skills to the younger ages. Ideally, we would form a team of 10-14 students Grades 4-6. Grades 7-12 would be added as the program matures and volunteers come forward. As the club grows, the coaches gain more experience, and the students advance, more programs can be offered to expand the opportunities available to our homeschooling community.

The 3-5 year goals could look like this: To facilitate the training necessary for home schooled students to prepare, practice, and polish speech/debate skills (Speech, Debate)to develop useful knowledge about the law, questioning techniques, critical thinking, and advocacy skills (Mock Trial), to acquire a working knowledge of the operation and fundamentals of our democracy and prepare middle schoolers who wish to participate in the YMCA's Youth and Government Program at the high school level (Junior Youth and Government), and learn international relations, negotiation tactics, and conflict prevention as we inspire the next generation of international leaders through an understanding of the operations of the United Nations (Model UN).

Remember that experience in debate is not required because a successful club needs the contribution of many talents. If you are passionate about Speech/Debate and would like to work with us to bring a valuable program to Plano/Richardson area home schoolers, please contact me by email for details. I look forward to hearing from you.

Please RSVP: sandra_d_carey@yahoo.com
We hope to see you there!

39. NORTH TEXAS LEADERS AND STUDENTS RECOGNIZED AT THSC's ANNUAL HOME SCHOOL AWARDS BANQUET

April 27th was a special night for attendees at the 12th Annual THSC Awards Banquet in Irving. This year's theme was "Building on the Past; Looking to the Future." A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Texas Home School Coalition's Leader of the Year. Both the winner and the runner-up each received an unprecedented 56 letters of nomination from the groups that they serve.

Rita Parker, with the Enrichment Classes of Carrollton and North Texas Christian Home School Prom, received recognition as Outstanding Leader for her enthusiastic, selfless, loving, godly, excellent, and sacrificial service.

The THSC 2007 Leader of the Year, Terri Threadgill, had served in leadership with the Plano Educators Association of Christian Homeschoolers, N-Tech Co-op, PATH Co-op, and THEO. She began "Homeschool? Who, Me?" seminars, having helped more than 100 families get started home schooling. She has mentored individual families and helped start a student council. She was recognized for her kind, humble, steadfast, inspirational, sacrificial, and visionary leadership in the service to her home school community.

Also recognized during the event were the winners of The Good Citizenship Award, for volunteer work done from April 1, 2006, to April 1, 2007:
Leah and Sara Heinzman, who, as sisters, worked together and tied for the following awards:
Ranger Award for most hours in Political Campaigns (505 hours)
Lone Star Award for most hours in Political Party Participation (72 hours)
Alamo Award for most Voters Registered (48 hours, 239 registered)

Alexandra Valdez received the Republic Award for most hours in Legislative Process (78.5)

Recognized in absentia were the first place winners in the State Home School Speech and Debate Tournament: Brian Morgan, Katie Riley, Emylee Pinero, Paul Hastings, and Alan Carillo. Jacob Aschmutat, Timothy Hardy, Brandon Smith, Adam Hardy, Andrew Roblyer, and Samantha Nasser also placed first in various events at the Texas State Championships for Speech and Debate.

THSC awarded three Patrick Henry College scholarships. The $3,000 scholarship went to Jessica Lyn Jones. Nicole Aubrey LaSalle received the $2,000 award, and Karis Lynn Lichtenwalter accepted the $1,000 gift.

The Outstanding Legislator award for 2007 went to Representative Jerry Madden, for his work in the Texas Legislature regarding parent-taught driver education and for his intervention with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice on behalf of the home school community of Texas.

Special Awards for service to the home school community were given to Wendy Wilkerson, THSC staff member, and Gavino and Ruth Perez, who have served with the boards of the Family Educators Alliance of South Texas and THSC and have served the home school communities of San Antonio and Texas for many years.

The audience was treated to a preview of the documentary which tells the story, along with the trials and battles, of the early days of the modern home school movement in Texas and was introduced to some of the pioneers who helped win the freedoms that today's home schoolers enjoy. Last, but not least, the keynote speaker, Judge Don Willett, gave a heartfelt talk, sharing, among other things, the story of his own mother's sacrifice and commitment that helped prepare him to serve Texas in the capacity of a state supreme court justice today.

The 2007 THSC Awards Banquet aptly illustrated how Texas home schoolers have built on the past, from the history previewed in the documentary, to the keynote speaker's tribute to his mother's sacrifices for him. We also look to the future, awarding the wonderful teens who will lead that future, and encouraging them to forge ahead for their children--our grandchildren.
